LEVEL 2 FOOTBALL DRILLS

HEADING - DEFENDING

KEY FACTORS

#Approach - get in line of the flight of the ball.

#Adjust to the flight of the ball, forward,        backwards to the ball.

# Ball Contact:-

  - Go in and attack the ball:

  - Use upper body power

  - Mid-line or below ball for height

  - Often head back ball returning in the same direction

  - Use pace of the ball to deflect in another direction

# Head contact

  - Attack ball at optimum point

  - Generate power

# Timing of runs

# Elevation, use of arms

TECHNIQUE

See sketch. 40 x 30 yards plus 5 yard middle for set of balls, 12 Payers.  The Attackers  (red) move to wide areas to cross the ball ending with a Defensive header.  If required Servers can be used to vary ball play and angles.

SKILL

Set up as technique, but with one Attacker so there is a 2 v 1 situation in the goal area.  Depending on the ability of the Players, the set up can be varies so that the Goal Keeper can become a Defender or an extra Server etc.  Progression by adding attackers. Look for decision making, such as; positional play, touch tight or leave space, crosses to near and far side post.

GAME

Area extended to 40 x 30 yards, 2 goal keepers and 5 outfield players for each team of which two will be servers to encourage crosses and defensive heading.

TIMINGS

Introduction, debrief & change sessions 5 mins, Warm up 10 Mins, Technique 7.5 mins, Skill 7.5 mins, Game 20 mins, Cool down 10 mins.

TOTAL SESSION TIME 60 mins
