Lampard to captain England against Costa Rica

Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard will captain England on Tuesday reportedly for the last time. Lampard who has not started a game in the World Cup 2014 is likely to retire from international football at the end of the World Cup.

Lampard who is joint 7th in the list of most capped England player of all time is likely to win his 106th Cap for England taking him to joint 6th on the list with Manchester United legend Sir Bobby Charlton.

Steven Gerrard’s international future is also uncertain after a dismal World Cup campaign. Gerrard is only 2 caps behind England icon David Backham (115 Caps) who is currently the most capped outfield player for England and only second behind Peter Shilton (125 caps). If Gerrard does not hang up his international boots he is likely to become England’s most capped outfield plater.

At yesterday’s press conference in Brazil Gerrard said “There is no truth that I’ll be making any announcements within a week,” the England captain said.

“I think I need more time than that. I’ve spoken to the manager this morning and have asked him for some to consider my future, but I certainly won’t be rushing into any decision.

“I don’t feel like it’s right to make a decision now or in a week’s time.

“I’m still hurting very bad and broken over what’s gone on over the last couple of weeks, so I need to get away, get on holiday and basically clear my head before I make that big decision.”
