England on the brink of elimination

England is on the brink of being knocked out of the 2014 World Cup after a 2.1 defeat to Uruguay.

England who fielded the same 11 as they did against Italy found themselves 1.0 down after 39 minutes when Liverpool striker Luis Suarez fired Uruguay in front.

England in the second half put up a fight and found themselves level after 75 minutes after Rooney tipped home Glen Johnson’s cross. Following the goal Uruguay had several good chances to retake the lead. 5 minutes from time England’s hope were all but shattered after another goal from Luis Suarez.

England who are now bottom of group D need to rely on Italy to beat Costa Rica and Uruguay and England to beat Costa Rica in their final game.

After the game Liverpool and England Captain Steven Gerrard said "Italy are a fantastic team and capable of winning both games but we're clutching at straws"

"The position we're in is the position we didn't want to be in coming into the tournament, relying on other people's results. It's very difficult at the moment.

"We'll have to wait and see what happens in tomorrow's fixture. The manager will have to wait and see what happens before deciding what he is going to do.

"If there's nothing to play for then I don't know if he'll play a completely different team. But it's a very tough moment, at this moment."
